Right to work
Right to work is the legal entitlement of an individual to work in the UK. UK employers are legally required to check and verify a candidate's right to work before employment begins.
Every UK employer must carry out a right-to-work check before employing someone. Failure to do so can result in a substantial civil penalty per illegal worker. Right to work can be demonstrated via a UK or Irish passport, a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP), a Home Office share code (for candidates with eVisa status or settled status), or certain other approved documents. Right-to-work checks should be carried out before employment starts. International candidates who do not yet have the right to work in the UK require sponsorship via an appropriate visa route if the employer wishes to hire them.
