What is a sponsor licence and when does an employer need one?
A sponsor licence gives a UK employer the legal permission to employ workers on certain visa routes. This guide explains the basics clearly.
In one sentence
A UK sponsor licence is a permission granted by the Home Office that allows an employer to employ workers on certain visa routes, including the Skilled Worker route.
Quick answers
- A sponsor licence is required when hiring a candidate who needs a Skilled Worker visa or another sponsorship-based visa route
- Sponsor licences are issued by the Home Office and administered through the Sponsor Management System (SMS)
- Not all international candidates require a sponsor licence — some already have the right to work in the UK
- Applying for a sponsor licence takes time — this must be factored into hiring timelines
- Hirenza does not apply for sponsor licences; this is handled by Harveys Legal
What a sponsor licence is
A sponsor licence is a permission from the UK Home Office that allows a business to employ workers from outside the UK on certain visa routes. The most common route for professional roles is the Skilled Worker route.
Without a sponsor licence, a UK employer cannot sponsor a worker on the Skilled Worker route. If the worker does not already have the right to work in the UK, the hire cannot proceed.
When an employer needs a sponsor licence
An employer needs a sponsor licence when the candidate does not already have the right to work in the UK, the role qualifies for the Skilled Worker route, and the employer wants to issue a Certificate of Sponsorship to the candidate.
Employers do not need a sponsor licence to hire candidates who already have the right to work — for example, those with settled status, a graduate visa, or an open work permit.
What a sponsor licence does not guarantee
A sponsor licence does not guarantee that a specific candidate's visa application will be approved. The Home Office makes visa decisions independently. Hirenza and Harveys Legal cannot predict or guarantee Home Office outcomes.
Who issues sponsor licences
Sponsor licences are issued by the Home Office. Applications are submitted online through UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI). The process involves supplying evidence about the business, its HR systems, and its ability to meet sponsor obligations. Applications currently take the Home Office approximately 8 weeks to process under the standard service.
